Yosemite National Park visitor, 24, dies at popular Merced River swimming hole

Last week in Yosemite National Park, a 24-year-old visitor died at a popular swimming hole on the South Fork of the Merced River beneath the park’s Wawona Swinging Bridge.

California resident Lai Yinshan had been visiting the park with friends on July 20 when he was discovered injured at the well-known swimming hole at the park’s southern end, a Yosemite spokesperson confirmed to SFGATE.

A 911 call was placed to park dispatch at around 4 p.m., and upon responding to the scene, park rangers found Lai unresponsive. They immediately applied lifesaving measures, but he could not be revived. Rangers pronounced him dead at the scene. 

Lai’s death remains under investigation, and park officials have not released a cause. No additional information was immediately available, but YourCentralValley.com previously reported that a person had drowned beneath Wawona Swinging Bridge without identifying the victim.

The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division confirmed to SFGATE that a man died in the Wawona area on July 20 but referred questions about the victim’s identity and the circumstances of the death to the National Park Service.
