Teen burglary suspect fatally shot after Fremont resident grabs gun

A teenage burglary suspect was fatally shot with his own gun after an apartment resident wrestled the firearm away from him during a struggle in Fremont, police said in a Monday news release.

The shooting, which marks the city’s third homicide of 2026, happened around 12:15 p.m. Friday at an apartment on San Pedro Drive, the Fremont Police Department said. Investigators said two armed teens forced their way into an apartment and assaulted the occupants. One of the residents was able to grab a firearm from one of the teens during a struggle and fired it toward them, fatally wounding one of them.

Officers responding to the shooting found a male suspect with a gunshot wound and provided medical aid, police said. The suspect was taken to a trauma center, where he died from his injuries.

Police located and identified the second teenage suspect after he left the apartment. He was booked into the Juvenile Justice Center on suspicion of felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm and residential burglary.

The two residents had injuries that were not life-threatening.

On Friday, police initially said in a news release that officers had detained multiple people who escaped the scene and that investigators did not believe there were any outstanding suspects or threats to the public.
