Gavin Newsom is selling his mansion, complete with cold plunge and wine cellar

Gavin Newsom listed his Sacramento mansion Monday for $7.5 million –– more than double what he bought it for seven years ago.

Newsom and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom announced that they had bought the over 12,000-square-foot residence in Fair Oaks, which is just 15 miles from the state Capitol, in 2019. He’s now selling his home four months before he ends his term as governor and prepares for a widely expected presidential run.

Newsom bought the mansion in the Sacramento suburbs to avoid living in the official governor’s mansion, a 150-year-old property that was home to 13 governors, including most recently Jerry Brown, who moved into the home in 2015 after the mansion served as a museum for decades. Brown moved into the three-story Victorian home after a $4 million renovation, which updated the electrical and plumbing. The last governor to live there before Brown was Ronald Reagan, who resided there for a few months in 1967.

Newsom said his decision not to live in the official governor’s mansion was to move to a “more kid-friendly” home. The seven-bedroom Fair Oaks mansion comes with a resort-style pool, a 5,000-bottle wine cellar, and a tennis court. He bought it at the time for $3.7 million. 

Matthew Hindy, a real estate agent with Nick Sadek Sotheby’s International Realty, which is listing the property, declined to comment when reached by SFGATE.

Monday’s listing comes as the governor’s family relocates 90 miles west to Marin County, where they lived prior to Newsom’s election. In 2024, they bought a home in Kentfield for $9 million. At the time, their plan was to hold onto the Sacramento home and split their time between both places, Politico reported. They also wanted to enroll their eldest daughter into high school as an incoming freshman. Their kids are all now enrolled in school in Marin County, according to the outlet.

“With the Governor’s term ending in January 2027, the family began a gradual transition in 2024, purchasing a home in Marin County to provide continuity for their children’s education. The sale of their Sacramento home is the next step in that transition,” Izzy Gardon, a spokesperson for Newsom, said in a statement to SFGATE. The office did not immediately respond whether that means the Newsoms have already relocated full-time to Marin.

The governor and Siebel Newsom had already owned a home once before in Kentfield, where they raised their kids until 2018, when Newsom was elected governor. They bought a 1,800-square-foot home, with a view of Mount Tamalpais, in 2011. He bought the home for $5.9 million after he left his post as San Francisco mayor and was elected as California’s lieutenant governor.

Newsom is the third consecutive governor to split time between Sacramento and another part of the state. Brown commuted from Oakland for part of his term, and Arnold Schwarzenegger commuted from Los Angeles.
