Former SF Nordstrom Rack to be converted to Sprouts supermarket
San Francisco’s first Sprouts Farmers Market finally has an opening timeline.
The forthcoming Sprouts is expected to open at 555 Ninth St. in the SoMa neighborhood by 2028, Sprouts spokesperson Mychael Ramirez confirmed to SFGATE.

“Sprouts looks forward to continuing to expand its footprint in California while bringing a wide assortment of fresh, local and better-for-you products to the community,” Ramirez said.
Sprouts will take up the former Nordstrom Rack space that closed in 2021 at a shopping center owned by Acadia Realty, which was first reported by WhatNow.com. The location is on the edge of SoMA near the Mission District and the Interstate 80 and Highway 101 interchange. The new Sprouts will bring some competition to the neighboring Trader Joe’s a couple of stores away. SFGATE reached out to Acadia for comment but did not hear back by publication.
Acadia filed a commercial application with the city in May that is currently under review with San Francisco Planning. The document shows that the new grocery store could be more than 25,700 square feet.

The new Sprouts location comes as the Phoenix-headquartered grocery chain has slowly opened stores across California. In 2023, Sprouts opened a distribution center in Fullerton that Sprouts CEO Jack Sinclair said would help the grocer “expand across California and the country,” Supermarket News reported.

The Bay Area has gained four Sprouts grocery stores in recent years, with Pittsburg and San Leandro locations opening in 2025. Sprouts also opened a store in Hayward in 2024 and another in San Jose in 2023.
