Woman riding scooter dies in downtown San Francisco crash

A woman died after being struck in a vehicle crash near Powell and Market streets in downtown San Francisco on Friday morning, the San Francisco Police Department said.

San Francisco police responded to the busy intersection at approximately 8:18 a.m. and found a person in the street with life-threatening injuries. A scooter was found lying beside her, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. (The Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms.)

SFPD said officers rendered aid until medics arrived, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving efforts. The crash prompted officials to warn people to avoid the area of Powell and Market for several hours Friday. AlertSF announced shortly after 1 p.m. that emergency crews had cleared the scene, though residual traffic delays were expected.

Police said they located the vehicle and driver involved in the crash. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

The department’s traffic collision investigation unit is leading the investigation. Police have not released the identity of the person killed or additional details about the circumstances of the crash.

A recent report from the SFMTA found increasing reports of people on stand-up devices like scooters getting injured in collisions. The report found through May of this year there were 181 people injured while on stand-up devices.
