Oct. 2, 12:10 p.m. Two people were killed in a shooting Friday morning in the hills just above the UC Berkeley campus.

Berkeley police began receiving calls about possible gunfire at 10:48 a.m. at 499 Panoramic Way, along the Oakland-Berkeley border. Oakland police are leading the investigation.

The victims, a 63-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man, were residents of a home on the 400 block of Panoramic Way and appear to have been married, Oakland Police Department Assistant Chief Casey Johnson told SFGATE. Both were found outside the residence after a neighbor heard gunshots and called police.

A firearm was recovered at the scene, Johnson said. Investigators have not ruled out a homicide-suicide, but police have not determined what led to the shooting. Johnson said there is no threat to the public.

In a community advisory statement, UC Berkeley police said there were “no known or ongoing threats to the campus” following the shooting, though officers remained active in the area.

By Friday afternoon, the upscale neighborhood was quiet with little sign of a violent crime scene until the 400 block of Panoramic Way. Police tape cordoned off the block, a news helicopter circled overhead, and officers could be seen investigating farther up the street.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
