Search grows after missing man’s car found at California skate park

A large search was set to resume Monday morning for a 24-year-old Roseville man who disappeared after apparently hiking into a Northern California river canyon.

Ian Roberts was last seen at 9:45 a.m. Friday, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators believe Roberts left his vehicle at the skate park at Overlook Park before hiking into the American River Canyon. The park sits on the edge of Auburn, overlooking the canyon, and provides direct access to trails descending into it, less than a mile from Interstate 80.

Roberts failed to return home Friday night, and Roseville police received a missing person report early Saturday. With help from his family, authorities tracked his vehicle to the park.

About 100 search and rescue personnel from multiple agencies searched the canyon Sunday. The effort included dog teams, drones and a sheriff’s helicopter, which transported crews into and out of the terrain. Members of the sheriff’s office marine unit searched along the American River’s banks, while authorities requested additional aerial assistance from the state.

Sunday’s operation ended around 5 p.m. so ground crews could safely leave the canyon before dark. Roberts remained missing Sunday evening, and authorities planned to resume searching Monday morning.

A missing person poster released by authorities shows Roberts in what appears to be an image captured by a Ring doorbell camera at 9:45 a.m. Friday. He was wearing a brown T-shirt, dark shorts and gray shoes, and may also have had a beanie. Roberts is described as 6 feet tall and weighing approximately 210 pounds.
