LA’s most convenient airport is about to get better with new terminal

Flying out of one of Los Angeles County’s popular airports is about to feel more spacious and luxurious, as its new terminal is set to open this fall.

Hollywood-Burbank Airport is replacing its two current terminals with one larger terminal, which will open to the public on Oct. 13, according to airport officials. The airport released photos this week showcasing the $1.25 billion, 355,000-square-foot passenger terminal project.

The current airport design, built in 1930, has needed an update for years to comply with state seismic and accessibility standards and Federal Aviation Administration design standards (the airport’s two runways are too close to the existing terminals). The project has been in the works since 2016, and the airport authority broke ground in January 2024.

Though the new terminal will have a sleek new design and be more than than the existing facility, it will still have 14 gates. And the plan is for flyers to still board the plane from the apron via stairs rather than a traditional jet bridge. The combination of the two should make skipping LAX, still plagued with construction projects, even more satisfying.

Construction photos showcase baggage carousels, check-in consoles, sleek updated waiting areas, bathrooms and a new parking garage. Hollywood-Burbank Airport spokesperson Mike Christensen told SFGATE that the roadways are still being built out.

“Concessions are really becoming a focus with the scheduled October 13 opening only a few months away,” Christensen said in an email Friday. After construction is complete, the previous terminals are slated to be demolished within a year.

The airport currently houses nine resident airlines and . Though its airlines largely serve destinations in the western U.S., JetBlue Airways has a flight to New York JFK, Alaska Airlines flies to Honolulu and Southwest plans to start flights to Honolulu next month.
