Firefighters pull 18 people from windows during SF apartment fire
Firefighters rescued 18 people from the upper floors of a burning San Francisco apartment building early Thursday morning.

The two-alarm fire broke out shortly before 2 a.m. on the 800 block of Fillmore Street, where crews found heavy flames pouring from the second floor of a three-story residential building above commercial space, with several occupants trapped inside, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.
“The rescues were immediate,” San Francisco Fire Department Capt. Jonathan Baxter told SFGATE. “There was one injury that was minor, and that person will be OK.”
Firefighters used aerial and ground ladders to pull 18 people from second- and third-floor windows, while others were led out through the building. The broader rescue response lasted a little more than two hours.
The fire spread through 865 and 855 Fillmore St., but crews contained the flames at 3:25 a.m. and declared the fire under control eight minutes later.

“There’s significant damage to at least two units and moderate damage throughout the building,” Baxter said.
Nineteen residents from four units were displaced and were receiving assistance from the American Red Cross and the San Francisco Human Services Agency. Muni provided a bus as a temporary shelter.
The cause remains under investigation.
