Roy Anthony Lopez is accused of fatally beating his wife Jasmyne Garcia, 34, as one of their children watched inside the family’s Vintage Lane home, Bay Area News Group reported. Lopez appeared in Santa Clara County Superior Court on Wednesday, where he did not enter a plea.
Although Santa Clara County’s Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner has not publicly identified the woman, the affidavit cited by Bay Area News Group names Garcia, identified in the document as Jasmyn Lopez, as Lopez’s wife and person who was killed. Garcia’s family identified her in a GoFundMe fundraiser.
“Tragically Jasmyne’s life was taken far too soon, by the hands of another,” her family wrote on the fundraiser page. “No family should ever have to endure the unimaginable pain of losing someone they love in such a heartbreaking way.”
Garcia’s family said donations to their fundraiser will go directly toward supporting her children. So far, the GoFundMe has raised more than half of its $20,000 goal.
“Her children were her world, and the love she had for them was immeasurable,” her family wrote. “They were a huge part of who she was and her greatest joy was being their mom.”
The couple’s three children — ages 14, 6, and 3 — have been placed in the custody of the Santa Clara County Department of Family and Children’s Services, SFGATE previously reported.

Prosecutors also charged Lopez with child endangerment after investigators determined that the couple’s 6-year-old son witnessed the attack, according to the affidavit cited by Bay Area News Group. The boy reportedly told investigators that Lopez punched Garcia in the face “because ‘Daddy got mad,’” and he also said he hid under a bed during the attack.
Garcia’s 14-year-old son returned home around 8 p.m. on Friday night to find blood, damaged walls and water throughout the kitchen before discovering his mother unable to speak and suffering severe facial injuries to the point that she was “unrecognizable,” the outlet reported. She repeatedly lost consciousness through the night.
On Saturday morning, Lopez drove to Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose and told medical staff that he had killed his wife, SFGATE previously reported. First responders found Garcia in a vehicle and administered lifesaving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Morgan Hill police were notified around 9:20 a.m. that day about what Lopez had confessed. Lopez was detained by San Jose police before Morgan Hill officers took him into custody, and he was later booked into the Santa Clara County Jail.
During the Wednesday hearing, a judge ordered that he be held in jail and also barred him from contacting his three children. He is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 15.
