The National Park Service is investigating an incident involving a 23-year-old man at Nevada Fall in Yosemite National Park, officials confirmed to SFGATE on Monday.

The brief statement came after social media posts over the weekend described an accident and an emergency response near one of the park’s most visited waterfalls, raising questions about a possible fatality.

“The National Park Service is investigating an incident involving a 23-year-old male at Nevada Fall in Yosemite National Park on June 20, 2026,” a Yosemite spokesperson told SFGATE in an email. “Emergency personnel responded to the incident, which remains under investigation. No additional information is available at this time.”

Reports about the incident began circulating Sunday on Reddit, where one user described what they witnessed as a swift-water incident above the waterfall Saturday, though those accounts have not been independently verified by SFGATE. A group of friends had been caught in the current atop Nevada Fall, according to the post.

“A person nearby handed the girl a branch and she was rescued,” one user wrote. “But the other person couldn’t attach to anything and went with the current to the fall.”

They said a helicopter arrived about an hour later and searched the area, while ground rescuers headed toward Nevada Fall carrying equipment.

Another Reddit user said they encountered what appeared to be an emergency recovery operation while hiking the Mist Trail on Sunday.

“I was hiking Mist Trail this afternoon when people in yellow shirts … rolled a body bag down the granite steps on an off-road stretcher,” the user wrote. “We all had to step to the side so they could make it down the steps.”

The poster described the scene as “one of the most chilling things I’ve ever witnessed” and said they were “still processing it.” Park officials have not released additional details, including the circumstances surrounding the event or the condition of the 23-year-old man. SFGATE contacted the Mariposa County Coroner’s Office but did not hear back prior to publication.
