University of California Police Department officers took Quaylin Wesley into custody Saturday afternoon. Wesley was booked into Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail on Saturday evening, according to jail records. He faces felony charges including first-degree burglary, committing a lewd act on a child under 14 and sodomy involving a person under 18.
The arrest stems from an assault reported Saturday inside a campus residence hall, the Berkeley Scanner reported.
The Berkeley Scanner reported that Wesley was working as summer camp counselor, and a UC Berkeley spokesperson told the outlet the camp is not overseen by the university. Neither the name of the camp nor the residence hall has been publicized.
According to his LinkedIn profile, he’s been employed as a physical education teacher at the Francophone Charter School of Oakland for under a year. The Francophone Charter School of Oakland website previously listed Wesley on its staff page, but he has since been removed from the page.
Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances of the assault.
The arrest took place hours after UCPD issued a campus alert about what had first been reported as an attempted sexual assault, according to a community advisory shared with SFGATE by UC Berkeley spokesperson Janet Gilmore.

“Through subsequent investigation, UCPD determined that the incident was a completed sexual assault, rather than an attempted one,” the advisory said.

Police said detectives are continuing to investigate the case.
In its advisory, UCPD urged anyone with information about the crime or “similar incidents” to contact investigators.
According to Alameda County jail records, Wesley was arrested in Berkeley at about 2:21 p.m. Saturday. Bail was set at $425,000. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning at Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland. UCPD said detectives remain actively investigating the case.
