According to a June 12 news release from the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI Sacramento Field Office, authorities captured sex offender Carl Cacconie, who had been on the run for almost 10 months.
In July of 2025, Cacconie was convicted of six counts of committing lewd acts on a child under the age of 14, and faced sentencing in August, the release says. Despite requests from the El Dorado County DA’s office to send him into custody while he awaited sentencing, Cacconie was out on bail, which was set at $1 million. Cacconie agreed to surrender his passport and wear a monitoring device, which stopped transmitting just days before sentencing. He was last seen in San Francisco on Aug. 22, 2025.
In May 2026, nearly a year after his disappearance, California officials issued a federal warrant for Cacconie’s arrest, eventually locating him in Scottsdale, Arizona after an extensive multiagency search effort. The FBI Phoenix Desert Hawk Fugitive Task Force — a team of U.S. Border Patrol agents, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and special FBI agents — apprehended him. Though it’s unclear where Cacconie is currently in custody based on the release, he will be extradited to California for sentencing, the June 12 announcement says.

“The El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI Sacramento Field Office are grateful for the community’s support throughout this nearly 10-month search and thank Cacconie’s survivor and her family for their patience throughout the effort to locate Cacconie,” the release continues.
