The stretch along the California-Nevada border often jams up during holiday weekends, as the artery is the only direct route between Las Vegas and Southern California.
Everyone who drives the corridor during busy times knows it’s a problem. Late last year, a group of California and Nevada labor and business leaders formed a coalition to fund an 18-month feasibility study into widening the roadway. The Las Vegas Review-Journal also reported it’s one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in the two states; there were over 1,000 injury or fatal crashes between Barstow and Nevada between 2020 and 2024. The Review-Journal reported someone dies on that stretch approximately every three days.
