Arrest made 18 years after SF man killed on eve of his wedding

Eighteen years after a San Francisco man was shot to death on the eve of his wedding, police say they have arrested a suspect in his killing.

Derreyl Goode, 40, was arrested Monday in Los Angeles on suspicion of killing Jason Mosley, a 28-year-old hotel desk clerk, outside a Western Addition housing complex on the 500 block of Fulton Street on April 27, 2008. Mosley was supposed to marry his pregnant fiancée, Alejandra Lara, at San Francisco City Hall, three blocks from where he was killed, the following day. Instead, Lara spent that Monday grieving alongside Mosley’s mother, Selina Arceneaux.

According to San Francisco police, the department’s cold case unit recently identified Goode as a suspect and learned he was living in Las Vegas, then worked with the U.S. Marshals Service to locate him in Los Angeles. The department told SFGATE on Wednesday that detectives cannot yet share how they cracked the nearly 2-decade-old case, as it remains an “open and active” investigation. 

As of Thursday morning, Goode is being held without bail at the Los Angeles County Men’s Central Jail.

The killing seemed inexplicable to Mosley’s family. At about 6 p.m. that Sunday, someone rang the doorbell at the home where Mosley cared for his 76-year-old grandmother, the Examiner reported at the time. When Mosley stepped outside, gunshots were heard. Two security guards fired at the shooter, who dropped his gun and fled. Mosley died at the scene.

“Everybody loved Jason,” Arceneaux said. “He wasn’t in a gang. The only thing that my family can think of is that it’s a case of mistaken identity.”

Mosley worked at the San Cristina Hotel on Market Street, a supportive-housing property operated by the Tenderloin Housing Clinic. He had turned his life around, loved his job and was excited about becoming both a husband and a father, according to a report from the funeral in the now-defunct nonprofit neighborhood newspaper .

Dozens of people packed the San Cristina’s community room for a memorial on May 2, 2008. Residents remembered a smiling, gentle man who was eager to help. About an hour before his death, Mosley had been handing out candy to children in the neighborhood. He cooked for his mother and grandmother and walked the family dog. Arceneaux sat in the second row, clutching a handkerchief as mourners embraced her. Mosley was her only child.

“He came home and fixed dinner for me and his grandmother and went out to his car and it was the last I saw him,” she told the room. “My baby, my baby, my baby.”

Mosley’s death came amid a violent stretch in San Francisco. The city recorded 97 homicides in 2008, compared with 28 in 2025, the fewest since 1954. 

Gang violence was a particular concern in both the Tenderloin, where Mosley worked, and the Western Addition, where he was killed. But his family and friends consistently said he had no gang connection, and police have not publicly described his killing as gang-related.

Goode was booked into jail in Los Angeles on suspicion of murder. Police said the case remains open and asked anyone with information to call 415-575-4444.
