Paul Pelosi charged with hit-and-run after July 4 weekend Napa Valley crash

Hit-and-run charges were officially announced Friday afternoon against Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, after a car crash over the July Fourth holiday weekend.

Napa County District Attorney Allison Haley filed a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge against Pelosi, 86, Friday, after he allegedly hit an unoccupied parked Tesla on July 3. Pelosi allegedly drove away from the scene after the crash, according to charging documents obtained by SFGATE

Pelosi was driving down a residential road near his home when he allegedly struck the car in Yountville and kept driving until his car broke down and police came to the scene, according to the New York Times. Pelosi was driving a brown Maserati convertible, according to the district attorney’s office. At the time that news of the crash broke, charges were still under review by the county.

Officers said he was not under the influence. In 2022, Pelosi pleaded guilty to driving under the influence after he crashed a Porsche into an oncoming Jeep near Oakville. Pelosi said he had had cataract surgery days earlier.

The New York Times reported on Thursday that Pelosi has had at least eight driving violations in the San Francisco Bay Area over the past 13 years.

Pelosi is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 14. According to his charges, he is facing up to six months in county jail, or a fine of up to $1,000, or both.

The county said it does not typically issue news releases around misdemeanor hit-and-run cases but did so “because of the significant public and media interest surrounding this case.”
