The driver, a 21-year-old from Yuba City, was driving on Highway 9 at about 9:30 p.m. near Redwood Gulch Road and lost control of the car, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release. The vehicle had two other passengers, a 27-year-old man from Salem, Oregon, and a 17-year old who is from San Jose.

The car “went off the orad and fell down a steep embankment,” CHP said, leaving the group with fatal injuries. Ross Lee, a spokesperson for CHP, confirmed to SFGATE that BMW fell about 400 feet.

The Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner told SFGATE that the three people have not been officially identified. However, CHP’s incident log shows that a large crowd, including family members, were at the crash scene just after 10 p.m. The coroner arrived on the scene at approximately 10:16 p.m., the log shows.
