Even so, the mayor\u2019s decision allowed other ride-hailing companies to operate on the historic thoroughfare, which has started to confuse private drivers into thinking they, too, can travel on the street.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/sanfranciscomovingguide.com\/?p=47\">Who is responsible for California\u2019s toxic borderland river?<\/a><\/p><\/div><div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" width=\"1\"\/><\/div><div><p>During the SF Land Use and Transportation Committee meeting on Monday,\u00a0San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency representatives presented a status report on Market Street.\u00a0<\/p><\/div><div><\/div><div><p>While Market Street is open to commercial vehicles, it\u2019s unavailable to individual drivers between Van Ness Avenue and Steuart Street, near the Embarcadero. Since December, pick-ups and drop-offs at select areas on the street were allowed in Uber and Lyft\u2019s luxury black cars.<\/p><\/div><div><p>Jenny Delumo, a city planner focused on transportation projects, fielded questions on the return of cars and informed the board that only Uber Black has actually started taking the city up on the access.<\/p><\/div><div><p>\u201cWe recently heard from Lyft Black that they are piloting a small number of pick-ups and drop-offs,\u201d Delumo said. \u201cAnd Waymo was not doing pick-up and drop-off on Market Street.\u201d<\/p><\/div><div><p>Lurie\u2019s\u00a0reversal of a six-year car-free policy triggered wide backlash from transit activists and even other ride-hailing companies at first. Uber threatened to sue the city to gain similar access, ultimately receiving consent, along with Lyft.<\/p><\/div><div><\/div><div><div><div><div><div><div><svg><desc>SF Gate Logo<\/desc><\/svg><\/div><\/div><div><svg><\/svg><\/div><svg><\/svg><\/div><\/div><h3><div>Don&#8217;t let Google decide who you trust.<\/div><\/h3><div>Make SFGATE a preferred source so your search results prioritize writing by actual people, not AI.<\/div><div>Add Preferred Source<\/div><\/div><\/div><div><p>Meanwhile, San Francisco transit and street safety advocacy groups braced for impact on one of the city\u2019s widest streets after ride-hailing companies were allowed to operate on it starting Dec. 15.<\/p><\/div><div><p>There has been minimal activity from Uber and Lyft on Market Street over the past several months. And after the mayor\u2019s declaration that Waymo would help kick-start downtown, the robotaxis have yet to answer his call.\u00a0<\/p><\/div><div><p>At the time of the announcement last year, Lurie\u2019s office said that Waymo on Market Street was \u201ca major step\u201d in revitalizing downtown San Francisco. Lurie called Waymo \u201canother safe and sustainable way\u201d to access shops, theaters, hotels and restaurants. Nicole Gavel, the head of business development and strategic partnerships at Waymo, added in a statement that \u201cserving riders on Market Street is the result of Waymo\u2019s strong collaboration with the city and our community.\u201d<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/sanfranciscomovingguide.com\/?p=45\">Newsom scores early win in his $787M lawsuit against Fox News<\/a><\/p><\/div><div><\/div><div><p>Julia Ilina, a spokesperson for\u00a0Waymo, explained to SFGATE why it\u2019s not providing pick-up or drop-off directly on Market Street. \u201cUnlike human drivers, we make significant efforts to park appropriately during pick up and drop off,\u201d she wrote in an email. \u201cThe pickup and drop-off options currently available on Market would require double parking, potentially impeding transit.\u201d<\/p><\/div><div><p>So far, Delumo told the board that the average number of ride-hailing vehicles on Market Street, mostly Uber Black, is about 10 an hour. Nevertheless, a San Francisco supervisor and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition are concerned that their presence is confusing the general public and has opened the gates for other cars to spill onto Market Street.<\/p><\/div><div><p>Supervisor Myrna Melgar, who represents District 7 on the western side of the city, said during the hearing that she\u2019s personally seen a rise in illegal driver behavior.<\/p><\/div><div><p>\u201cI ride Market Street on the daily on my bike. \u2026 What I have seen is a marked uptick of people in private vehicles after that happened,\u201d Melgar said. \u201cIt\u2019s almost like it was carte blanche for people to say, \u2018I can do this because Mayor Lurie said it\u2019s OK.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/div><div><\/div><div><p>Christopher White, executive director of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, echoed similar concerns in an email to\u00a0SFGATE. \u201cSince luxury passenger services began operating on Market, we\u2019ve seen a big uptick in private vehicles illegally driving on Market Street and in vehicles without commercial plates regularly blocking loading bays,\u201d he said. \u201cThe ambiguity of the passenger commercial vehicle loophole is creating confusion for drivers, which sows dangerous circumstances for pedestrians and people on bikes.\u201d<\/p><\/div><div><div><div>\n<div>\n\u00a0 \u00a0 <div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Join the SFGATE WhatsApp group\" class=\"wp-image-32\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/sanfranciscomovingguide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/a2b96627a90b886e4c8186432a8dc6c4-1024x576.png\" width=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sanfranciscomovingguide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/a2b96627a90b886e4c8186432a8dc6c4-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/sanfranciscomovingguide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/a2b96627a90b886e4c8186432a8dc6c4-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/sanfranciscomovingguide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/a2b96627a90b886e4c8186432a8dc6c4-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/sanfranciscomovingguide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/a2b96627a90b886e4c8186432a8dc6c4-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/sanfranciscomovingguide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/a2b96627a90b886e4c8186432a8dc6c4.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div><p>Lurie\u2019s reasoning for allowing cars to return was to open access to businesses along the corridor, especially hotel guests. White questioned whether the 10 trips an hour account exclusively for pick-ups and drop-offs or include data on through traffic, which renders the mayor\u2019s push moot since it means that Market Street was not the destination, but a pass-through.<br\/>\u00a0<br\/>\u201cThe justification for this policy was that it would bring people back to Market and help revitalize downtown,\u201d White said. \u201cHowever, the data that the City reported on only measures whether it\u2019s generating near-term disastrous outcomes. So how are we measuring success? While conditions on Market seem to be improving, it\u2019s not because of luxury ridehail.
