Bay Area parole bust reveals quarter-ton fireworks stash

On Friday, detectives from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said they seized about a quarter-ton of fireworks, illegal in unincorporated Alameda County, from a wanted felon during a parole sweep. The bust comes as a tougher county ordinance aimed to rein in this kind of activity is about to set in ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.

In a Facebook post, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said detectives from the Eden Township Substation joined California State Parole to carry out an arrest in unincorporated San Leandro. While searching the person’s residence, investigators found roughly 546 pounds of commercial-grade fireworks, the post said.

The Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordnance Disposal team took possession of the haul for safe destruction and the person whose home was searched was arrested on suspicion of possessing illegal fireworks and violating parole, and booked into the Santa Rita Jail.

The timing of the arrest comes before a new county ordinance taking effect on July 2. The Alameda County Board of Supervisors approved the measure on June 2 to back up existing state firework bans with a series of fines.

Once it goes into effect, fines will run $500 for a first offense, $750 for a second and up to $1,000 for third and following violations. The ordinance isn’t limited to just the people setting off the fireworks: property owners, tenants and hosts can now be fined if they even allow fireworks on their property. This also applies to fireworks labeled as “safe and sane.”

The crackdown follows a rough stretch for county responders. In 2025 — from June 4 to July 6 alone — the Eden Township Substation in San Leandro fielded .
