Woman killed, 32 injured on 210 Freeway after big-rig crosses median
Los Angeles County fire officials declared a mass casualty event after a big-rig jackknifed across a highway median, killing one woman and injuring dozens more.
Shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday, the driver of a big-rig drove over the center divide of the 210 Freeway near Irwindale Ave., slamming head-on into vehicles in the westbound lanes. LA County firefighters found one woman dead on arrival. Two people were taken to a hospital in critical condition, and eight more were transported with minor injuries. Twenty-two additional people were injured but declined to be taken by ambulance to a hospital. Of the injured, six were minors, the LA County Fire Department said on social media.
The woman who died has not been identified.
Photos and video from the scene show a Target-branded big-rig sitting across west and eastbound lanes. Target confirmed to People Magazine that the big-rig was being operated by a third-party carrier and referred additional questions to law enforcement.
It’s not clear what caused the driver to cross the median, and the circumstances of the crash are still under investigation. Westbound lanes of the 210 were closed entirely for hours and traffic rerouted as crews investigated and cleaned up the crash.
