Emergency crews were sent to a property on the 9000 block of Dyerville Loop Road in the Fruitland Ridge area on Wednesday after a 911 call reported a woman trapped in a well, Erin Inskip, a spokesperson for the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, told the Eureka Times-Standard. The area sits in the hills east of Highway 101, a few miles from Miranda, a small community along the Avenue of the Giants in Southern Humboldt.
“The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call reporting that a woman was trapped inside a well in Southern Humboldt,” Inskip told the outlet. “Deputies responded to the scene and conducted the initial investigation, while the Southern Humboldt Technical Rescue Team carried out the rescue operation. The circumstances surrounding how the woman entered the well remain under investigation.”
Scanner traffic suggested the woman, reported to be 34, had been in the roughly 20-foot-deep well since the previous night, with crews estimating she had been underwater since around 10 p.m., Redheaded Blackbelt reported. Volunteer fire crews from three nearby communities, including Miranda and Myers Flat, joined sheriff’s deputies in the response. Crews reportedly left the scene by midafternoon, and the case was turned over to the coroner.
The case is not being treated as suspicious, the sheriff’s office told the Times-Standard, though how the woman came to be in the well remains under investigation.
