Phillies rout Mets 15-3: Kyle Schwarber belts 3 homers, Bryce Harper hits for cycle

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Schwarber homered three times, including twice in Philadelphia’s eight-run third inning, and Bryce Harper hit for the cycle as the Philadelphia Phillies routed the New York Mets 15-3 on Saturday night.

Schwarber led off the third inning with a 456-foot home run to the second deck in right field off Mets starter Freddy Peralta (5-6). He capped the Phillies’ big inning with a 457-foot drive to almost the same spot off Cionel Perez.

Schwarber added a two-run homer in the seventh, his major league-leading 28th of the season, off Tobias Myers. It was the fifth career three-homer game for Schwarber, who was 4 for 5 with six RBIs and four runs scored in a season-high offensive output for the Phillies.

Cristopher Sánchez (9-3) allowed one earned run in six innings to lower his ERA to 1.80. It’s his 23rd straight start at Citizens Bank Park in which he allowed two earned runs or fewer, the second-most such starts by a pitcher at the same ballpark in MLB history since 1913, trailing only Jacob deGrom’s 24 at Citi Field for the Mets from Sept. 9, 2019 to Aug. 31, 2022.

Schwarber is the 67th player in major league history and second this season with multiple home runs in an inning, joining Houston’s Yordan Alvarez on June 12. Schwarber is the fourth Phillies player to hit two home runs in an inning, along with Trea Turner (Aug. 19, 2023), Von Hayes (June 11, 1985) and Andy Seminick (June 2, 1949).

Harper hit a solo home run in the first inning, his 16th of the year. He doubled and singled in the third, then hit a two-run triple to the gap in left-center field in the fifth for his first career cycle and the 11th in Phillies history.

Peralta allowed 10 hits and a career-worst 10 earned runs in 2 2/3 innings. His ERA rose from 3.90 to 4.83.

TIGERS 4, WHITE SOX 1

DETROIT (AP) — Troy Melton allowed one hit in six innings and the Detroit Tigers’ offense came alive late in a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.

Dillon Dingler had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs as Detroit won its second straight game after losing four of five.

Melton (4-0) gave up a homer to Sam Antonacci on his second pitch of the game but allowed only four more baserunners — on three walks and a hit batter. He struck out five while allowing two or fewer runs for the fourth time in five starts this season.

Two Tigers relievers finished, with Kenley Jansen pitching the ninth for his ninth save.

REDS 10, YANKEES 2

NEW YORK (AP) — Sal Stewart tied a career high with six RBIs and Cincinnati pulled away for a rout of New York.

The rookie gave the Reds the lead with a two-run double in the third off Will Warren (7-2) and lifted a sacrifice fly during a four-run fifth that followed a fielding error by New York first baseman Ben Rice.

Stewart capped his day with a bases-clearing double in the eighth that expanded Cincinnati’s lead to 9-1.

He also drove in six on April 15 against the San Francisco Giants.

Spencer Steer hit a three-run homer in the fifth as the Reds won for the sixth time in 17 games without Elly De La Cruz, who began a minor league rehab assignment on Friday.

Rookie Edwin Arroyo had four hits and reached base five times as the Reds finished with 15 hits.

Cincinnati starter Andrew Abbott (4-5) allowed one run and five hits in five-plus innings.

BLUE JAYS 8, CUBS 6

CHICAGO (AP) — Kazuma Okamoto hit a three-run home run to cap a five-run eighth inning and Toronto rallied from a five-run deficit to beat Chicago.

Daulton Varsho returned from the 10-day injured list and added a three-run shot as Toronto won for the fourth time in five games.

Matt Shaw and Pete Crow-Armstrong homered for the Cubs, who wasted a 5-0 lead in the late innings and missed a chance to win their third straight.

Chicago’s Jacob Webb (1-2) came on with two on in the eighth and gave up consecutive RBI singles to Alejandro Kirk and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to tie the game at 5-all.

Okamoto then sent his 16th homer of the season deep into the left-field bleachers to give the Blue Jays the lead for good. Jeff Hoffman (5-4) threw one inning of relief and Louis Varland got the final six outs for his 15th save.

BRAVES 4, BREWERS 3

ATLANTA (AP) — Ozzie Albies hit two homers, including a walk-off, two-run blast in the ninth inning to give Atlanta a come-from-behind win over Milwaukee.

After Matt Olson singled off Aaron Ashby (10-1) with one out, Albies delivered the decisive shot over the right field wall for his 12th of the season.

Ashby was denied his first save of the season as he failed to protect a 3-2 lead and instead was handed his first loss following a MLB-leading 10 wins.

Dylan Lee (3-0) pitched a scoreless ninth as Atlanta’s fourth pitcher.

Ashby’s blown save wasted a strong start from left-hander Kyle Harrison, who allowed only four hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings.

NATIONALS 4, RAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Dylan Crews homered in the ninth inning, C.J. Abrams also hit a solo homer and Washington beat Tampa Bay.

The Nationals look to win a franchise record-tying sixth consecutive road series when the teams finish off the three-game set Sunday.

Mitchell Parker (3-3) worked 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Brad Lord threw three shutout innings. Clayton Beeter finished for his fifth save, striking out Ben Williamson with the tying run on second base to end it.

Ian Seymor (3-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits. Tampa Bay lost at home for the 10th time in 35 games.

Washington starter Cade Cavalli, scratched from the lineup the previous day due to illness, labored through 2 2/3 innings. But despite loading the bases in each of the first two innings and allowing six hits, Cavalli limited the damage to two runs.

PADRES 6, RANGERS 4, 10 INNINGS

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Manny Machado hit a three-run homer, his 13th this season, in the 10th inning and tied his season high of five RBIs, helping San Diego rally for a victory over Texas.

The Padres still have a chance to win their seventh consecutive series against the Rangers after their 16th victory in the past 19 games against Texas. San Diego came back from a 3-1 deficit in the eighth a day after losing the series opener 9-7 despite scoring five runs in the top of the first.

Machado had an RBI double in the third, and his run-scoring groundout got the Padres within 3-2 in the eighth before Jackson Merrill’s tying single.

Jake Burger’s two-run homer gave the Rangers a 3-1 lead in the seventh after Texas had pulled even on consecutive doubles from Josh Jung and Wyatt Langford an inning earlier.

Joe Ross (0-1), the sixth Texas pitcher, walked Samad Taylor while the speedy No. 2 hitter was trying to bunt for the third time in the game to start the 10th. Machado lined a 2-0 sinker into the left field seats near the San Diego bullpen.

Adrian Morejon (6-1) struck out five in two scoreless innings, and Mason Miller earned his 20th save in 20 chances despite Langford’s RBI infield single in the 10th. Miller struck out two as the Rangers fanned a season-high 17 times.

MARLINS 6, GIANTS 3

MIAMI (AP) — Max Meyer allowed two runs in five innings to win his eighth consecutive decision to start the season, Heriberto Hernández homered and Miami beat San Francisco for its seventh straight victory at home.

Jakob Marsee doubled and singled for the Marlins, who are 13-4 in June and improved to 39-38 to move above .500 for the first time since April 13, when they were 9-8.

Meyer (8-0) labored through his outing, allowing seven hits, striking out seven and walking two. But he completed a perfect fifth to surpass Dontrelle Willis in franchise history to start the season with eight straight wins. Willis won his first seven decisions in 2005.

Casey Schmitt doubled twice and homered for the Giants, who stranded nine runners.

GUARDIANS 8, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) — Rookie Travis Bazzana set career highs with four hits, two homers, five RBIs and three runs scored, and Cleveland beat Houston.

Kyle Manzardo hit a two-run homer in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie, and tacked on an RBI single in the seventh.

Bazzana took Spencer Arrighetti deep on the first pitch of the game for his second leadoff homer, singled in the third inning and then hit a three-run homer off Arrighetti in the fifth. Bazzana added an RBI single in the seventh.

The first overall pick in the 2024 draft, who made his Major League debut April 28, is the second Guardians’ rookie to record a four-hit game and a two-homer game this season. Chase DeLauter hit two home runs at Seattle on March 26 and had four hits against the Athletics on May 1.
