Police say hundreds may have witnessed deadly shooting at Fairfield graduation

Fairfield police have still not named a suspect as they investigate the deadly shooting of a teen who was killed Wednesday evening following a graduation ceremony at Fairfield High School. Three other people, including an 11-year-old, were injured in the attack.

Police said they responded at about 7:15 p.m. to a shooting in the parking lot following the ceremony for Sem Yeto Continuation High School, which shares a campus with Fairfield High School. According to the statement, approximately 1,000 people were at the event and the deadly shooting was witnessed by potentially hundreds of people. 

“Detectives are currently identifying and interviewing these witnesses and are actively following up on investigative leads,” the statement read. 

Officials also said rumors that the injured 11-year-old victim had died were untrue and said the child was recovering at a local hospital.

The deadly shooting occurred as families returned to their cars and posed for photos after the ceremony for Sem Yeto continuation school, which shares a campus with Fairfield High School. 

In a brief press conference on Wednesday evening, Fairfield police spokesperson Michelle Belyea said an 18-year-old had been killed in the shooting and three other people, including an 11-year-old, were also injured. It was not clear whether the teen killed in the shooting was taking part in the graduation ceremony. 

Belyea said they “don’t have any information that there’s an ongoing threat to the community,” but said that it was a “very active incident.” At this point, no suspects have been named.

One witness told KRON-TV that people were posing for photographs when he saw a person run into the area with a gun.

“Out of nowhere, some dude just ran up,” Jacob Robinson told the outlet. “… Then when I looked up, yeah, he pointed the gun out and just started shooting.”

Fairfield Mayor Catherine Moy said in a statement on Facebook she is “praying for the families affected and all of those who witnessed the shooting.”

“My heart is breaking for the students and families involved,” she wrote. “I graduated from Fairfield High School and I can’t get my head and heart around this tragedy. I’m shaken to my soul.”

A continuation school is an alternative high school diploma program that focuses on helping students at risk of not graduating. Sem Yeto is described as an alternative setting “where students can improve their academic and social-emotional skills” as they recover deficient academic credits.

Requests for updates from the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District and the Fairfield Police Department were not immediately answered by the time of publication.
