Police arrested 26-year-old Texas resident Cameron Childers on Sept. 28 after rescuing him and the teen from his burning car. Both Childers and the 17-year-old sustained only minor to moderate injuries, according to police.

Kern County jail logs show Childers is held at the Lerdo Justice Facility, where he is charged with felony attempted murder, kidnapping, child abuse and police evasion and misdemeanor resisting arrest, according to court records. He is represented by the Kern County Public Defender’s Office.

On Sept. 27, the Yuba City Police Department received a report of a teen with an underlying medical condition missing from her home. Police say the teen was in contact with Childers, who had pending criminal charges in Texas for alleged possession of child sexual abuse material. Using license plate reader technology, Yuba City police said detectives tracked Childers down to Bakersfield, where they attempted to make contact with him, but Childers allegedly fled toward the Lake Isabella area. CHP assisted in the pursuit, deploying tire spikes before Childers allegedly drove the car off the cliff and caught fire, according to the news release.
