“It’s been very difficult for the circumstances as they are, but also not having information and closure, I know it’s very difficult for the family,” said Hemant Bhargava, associate dean at UC Davis Graduate School of Management and a longtime friend of the couple.
Bhargava, who worked closely with Rao for years, said there have been recent developments in the search efforts.
“There are updates in the sense that people have begun reaching the location and they’ve started bringing equipment to do search and excavations, but so far, no one has found anything in the location or in any of the other places where people are looking, including hospitals,” Bhargava said.

Loved ones have also traveled overseas to assist in the search for the couple.
“I know there are also family members who have flown over the site in helicopters. I don’t think they’ve been able to land because that’s still not possible,” Bhargava said.
Rao took a sabbatical this year and is expected to work with the Institute of Innovation on Food and Health before returning to UC Davis as a professor of marketing. Vasu teaches marketing and studies consumer behavior.
