The Grade Fire jumped to 33 acres with no containment in the late afternoon, according to Cal Fire, but by mid-evening the fire’s forward progress had been stopped. As of 6:30 p.m., Cal Fire reported 27% containment on the fire. The agency’s evacuation order for a large area east of Highway 101 had also been lifted.

Though Cal Fire still lists the cause as under investigation, the San Luis Obispo Tribune reported Wednesday that the fire was ignited by a car fire. A California Highway Patrol incident log shows a car fire in that area and states that the hillside adjacent to the highway caught on fire at 1:55 p.m. A 2 p.m. entry on the CHP log noted that the fire was moving at a “fast pace.”
