Man dies in Shasta Lake trying to save pet dog
A Redding man died after jumping into Shasta Lake to save a pet dog, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said.

Around 9 a.m. Friday, 911 dispatchers received a call from someone on a boat near the Bailey Cove Boat Launch. The person said they were on the lake when Geordan White, 60, jumped off the boat to retrieve a dog that had entered the water. White began struggling in the lake, and the 911 caller threw a floatation device toward him. White was unable to keep his grip on the floatation device and disappeared into the water, the sheriff’s office said.
A dive team was able to recover White’s body. An autopsy will be conducted to determine his cause of death.
The dog was pulled safely from the water by the 911 caller, the sheriff’s office said.

“The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office extends our condolences to the victim’s loved ones,” the department wrote in a news release. “The Sheriff’s Office also encourages the public to always wear personal flotation devices while on the water.”

White was a member of a local band, and a Facebook group paid tribute to him Saturday. “Rest In Peace Geordan White,” the post read. “You were one of the good ones and you will be missed.”
