Milpitas woman charged with murder after allegedly running over friend with SUV
A 32-year-old Milpitas woman has been charged with murder after police said she struck and killed a woman with an SUV in an apartment complex parking lot, and she may be linked to the fatal stabbing of another.

Anila Baby, 32, is charged with one count of murder in connection with the Aug. 28 death of 35-year-old Anjana Hari. A Santa Clara County criminal complaint alleges Baby killed a person “with malice aforethought” and includes aggravating allegations that the killing involved great violence, use of a weapon and planning. Her arraignment, originally scheduled for Tuesday, has been delayed until Sept. 10, according to court records reviewed by SFGATE.
Milpitas police said officers responding to reports of a hit-and-run at the Mill Creek Apartments shortly after noon on Aug. 28 found a woman, later identified as Hari, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses reported seeing a blue SUV flee, and officers later found the damaged vehicle nearby and arrested its 32-year-old driver, who was eventually identified as Baby.
Witnesses who spoke with police reported that before she was hit, Hari appeared “relaxed and smiling” as she approached the SUV in the Mill Creek Apartments parking lot, according to the Mercury News. Baby is accused of accelerating from a stop as Hari stood in front of the vehicle, striking and running her over before crashing into several parked vehicles and leaving the area, according to the newspaper.

Hari moved to the United States in 2021 and is survived by her husband and their 6-year-old daughter, according to the the Indian Express. Hari’s relatives told the outlet the 35-year-old woman was friends with Baby and they had lived in the same building. The outlet also mentioned the homicide of another woman in the area, reported to be a friend of both Baby and Hari.

San Jose police have not linked that second death to Baby or released any information about a potential suspect in that case.
