Detectives recover car after baby found dead by Monterey road

An infant was found dead beside a Monterey County road last weekend, and detectives are now asking the public for information about a car recovered during the investigation.

The body was discovered alongside the 100 block of Struve Road in north Monterey County at approximately 8:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. Fire personnel, emergency medical workers and sheriff’s deputies responded after someone reported finding the infant beside the road. Firefighters confirmed that the infant was dead when they arrived, authorities said.

The sheriff’s office has not released the infant’s name, age or gender, or disclosed a suspected cause of death. Officials also have not said how long the body may have been beside the road or whether investigators believe the infant died at that location.

As part of the investigation, detectives released photographs of a beige 2010 Mercury Milan with California license plate 6HCR883. Investigators have since located and recovered the four-door sedan, the sheriff’s office said.

Detectives now want to speak with anyone who saw the vehicle or its occupants on Saturday or Sunday. Authorities are particularly interested in sightings around Struve Road, neighboring north Monterey County communities and Salinas. Investigators are also asking residents, motorists and businesses to review any dashcam, surveillance camera or other video footage that could have captured the sedan or its occupants during that period.
