Man who went missing from SoCal campsite found dead

Deputies found Schofield’s body near the Yellow Post campsite Monday following an extensive search, and a preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play. The Big Bear sheriff’s station thanked the community for its help in the search.
Aug. 4, 11 a.m.A Southern California man vanished from a remote campsite while his fiancée slept, prompting deputies to ask the public for help finding him.
Brian Schofield, 47, was camping with his fiancée at a Yellow Post campsite on Delamar Mountain Road northwest of the unincorporated area of Fawnskin, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Schofield was last seen at the campsite at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Sunday shortly before the couple went to bed, officials said.
“When his fiancée awoke in the morning, Brian was nowhere to be found,” the department said in a news release.
His fiancée reported him missing at 8:53 a.m. on Monday. Authorities did not say whether Schofield had taken any camping equipment, a vehicle or a cellphone with him, and they didn’t describe the extent of the subsequent search.

Schofield, a Riverside resident, is 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs around 180 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt, camouflage shorts, orange hiking boots and a gray beanie.
Yellow Post No. 33 is an isolated U.S. Forest Service campsite that can be reached by dirt roads in the San Bernardino National Forest, several miles northwest of Big Bear Lake.

SFGATE contacted the sheriff’s department seeking additional information about Schofield’s disappearance and the search but did not hear back before the time of publication.
