Fire and emergency medical personnel, as well as Monterey County sheriff’s deputies, were called to the 100 block of Struve Road in the Moss Landing area shortly after 8:30 a.m. following a report that an infant had been found, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. Fire personnel confirmed that the infant was dead.

No information was released about the infant’s age or identity, how long the body may have been there or the circumstances surrounding the discovery.

At about 9:55 a.m. the same morning, deputies were sent to the 400 block of Old Stage Road in Salinas after a Monterey County employee found what appeared to be human remains, officials said. The two locations are roughly 17 miles apart.

The sheriff’s office described the discoveries as two separate incidents, but it was unclear whether investigators believe the cases could be connected. Officials did not release any information about the identity, age or sex of the person whose remains were found on Old Stage Road.
