Heat advisory issued as East Bay could see highs near 107

Parts of the East and North Bay are under a heat advisory on Monday as temperatures could push past 105 degrees, and even overnight temperatures aren’t expected to provide much relief.

Matt Mehle, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, told SFGATE that the Bay Area is expected to see the highest temperatures Monday afternoon around 4 p.m.

“We’re expecting temperatures to reach well over 100 degrees, with the hottest locations right around about 106 to 107,” he said.

The reason for the hot weather is a stubborn ridge of high pressure in the desert southwest that is expected to push temperatures near record levels in Las Vegas and nearby areas.

Mehle said the heat advisory for the Bay Area was issued since overnight temperatures were not offering much relief to residents in these areas. 

“It’s a combination of overnight temperatures and daytime temperatures that can lead to elevated heat risk,” he explained. Around 7 a.m. on Monday, Mehle said some sensors in the North Bay were already reading temperatures in the 80s.

“If we have people living in areas that are not getting relief at night, and they’re also seeing hot temps, that’s where the heat risk comes,” he said. 

The heat advisory has been issued for North Bay mountains, the interior East Bay valleys, the East Bay hills, the Santa Clara Valley, and the Santa Clara hills, starting at 10 a.m. on Monday and running through 10 p.m.

Walnut Creek is expected to be 101 degrees, Brentwood is forecast to hit 105 degrees, and Vacaville is expected to reach 104 degrees on Monday.

The hot and dry weather means there’s a “critical” threat of fire weather for parts of the North and East Bay on Monday, according to the weather service. 

Downtown San Francisco is expected to see a high of 79 degrees, Oakland is forecast to reach 83 degrees, and San Jose is expected to reach 94 degrees.

While highs in the 90s and even 100s are likely for much of the Bay Area, coastal areas are expected to see much more temperate weather. High temperatures in those areas are expected to reach the 70s to 80s, with the lows in the 60s, thanks to the marine layer and onshore breezes coming in from the Pacific Ocean.

“Our natural air conditioning, basically the cool Pacific, has been the savior for our coastal spots when it comes to heat,” Mehle said.
