Traffic on Bay Bridge recovering after major crash

Traffic was gridlocked on the Bay Bridge Sunday morning after a crash in the westbound lanes. Shortly before 9:15 a.m., California Highway Patrol issued an alert for severe traffic on the Bay Bridge. A crash on westbound I-80, just past Treasure Island Road, left an overturned vehicle that blocked several lanes of traffic. Caltrans traffic cameras showed the backup going all the way to the toll plaza, with cars crawling along the length of the westbound direction of the bridge.

According to Caltrans, just one lane was currently open for part of the morning.

“Motorists are advised to expect delays and to use alternate routes to avoid the area,” a 511 alert said. “There is no estimated time to reopen the roadway.”

By 11:30 a.m., traffic was beginning to clear on the bridge although the toll plaza area was still backed up. For the latest traffic information, check 511.
