Coast Guard medevacs Carnival cruise ship passenger off California coast
A woman was medevaced off a Carnival cruise ship last week after she showed signs of having a stroke, the Coast Guard said.

On Wednesday, the Coast Guard’s Humboldt Bay sector received a call for assistance on the Carnival Luminosa. The cruise ship, which can accommodate over 2,000 passengers and 900 crew members, primarily serves itineraries from San Francisco to Alaska or Mexico. A MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew flew 45 miles off Humboldt Bay to reach the vessel.
Video taken by the crew shows Coast Guard members lowered from the helicopter onto the deck of the Luminosa. They were met by Carnival crew and the passenger, a 51-year-old woman, who was having the medical emergency. The woman was secured into a basket stretcher and then airlifted from the deck into the helicopter. The medevac was conducted “despite 8- to 10-foot seas and 40-mph winds,” the Coast Guard said in a news release.
The woman was then taken to Mendocino Coast Hospital where she was reportedly in stable condition.

The Luminosa continued on to San Francisco, where it picked up passengers Thursday for a four-day cruise to Ensenada, Mexico.
