US marshals arrest Fairfield graduation shooting suspect in Texas

A 17-year-old boy was arrested Friday morning in Texas in connection with a fatal shooting at a California graduation ceremony.

The shooting occurred on June 3 in the parking lot of the Fairfield High School shortly after the graduation ceremony for the continuation school, the Sem Yeto High School. A newly graduated 18-year-old was killed in the shooting and three other people, including an 11-year-old child, were injured. Former Fairfield Mayor Catherine Moy previously said the teen who died was wearing his gap and gown, ready to pose for photos, when he was shot.

In the days following, the boy police suspected of the shooting “fled” from California to the Dallas-Forth area of Texas, the Fairfield Police Department said in a news release. Authorities with the U.S. Marshals Service and Fairfield Police detectives found the teenager at a home in the area early Friday morning and he was arrested. 

He will remain in custody and eventually be extradited to Solano County, police said.  

“Investigators conducted dozens of witness interviews, reviewed hours of surveillance and digital video,” examined photographs, executed search warrants and collected forensic evidence before arresting the teenager, police said.

In the Friday statement, Fairfield Police also thanked the “many witnesses” who came forward with information during the investigation. Police have previously said they believe hundreds of people could have been witnesses in the deadly shooting.

“We also recognize the victims, their families, and every student, staff member, family member, and community member who experienced the traumatic events of June 3. Their patience, resilience, and cooperation have been invaluable throughout this investigation,” police wrote Friday. 

Though the 17-year-old suspect was arrested, Fairfield Police said the shooting is still an active investigation. Anyone with information is urged to call the department at 707-428-7600 or email [email protected].
